A Silver Spring man was killed on Route 50 near the Prince George’s-Anne Arundel county line early Saturday morning in a fiery crash that was sparked when the vehicle he was driving rear-ended a tractor-trailer, police said Sunday.
Maryland State Police said Kenneth Earl Pettigrew was driving west on Route 50 near the line between the two counties when his Acura RL crashed into the back of the tractor- trailer. Police said the Acura continued for about 200 feet and eventually hit a concrete traffic barrier and caught fire.
Pettigrew, who was alone in the Acura, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to a police news release. Police did not give his age, but public records indicate he was 39. The driver of the tractor-trailer was unhurt, police said.
Police said they were still exploring the circumstances of the crash, which occurred just before 2:40 a.m., and did not detail why Pettigrew drove into the back of the tractor-trailer.
