Houston, TX : Sweeny police chief injured in intersection crash on Saturday, January, 6th 2018
The chief of a small Brazoria County town was recuperating Sunday in Houston after he was struck Saturday directing traffic along Texas 35.
John Barnard, 57, was off-duty and controlling an intersection at Texas 35 and Loop 419, near the refinery complex south of West Columbia. A semi-tractor trailer headed east on Texas 35 swerved around stopped traffic, just as officers instructed a sedan to enter the intersection, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The truck slammed into the car, spinning it into Barnard. He was taken by LifeFlight to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.
Sweeny police said in a social media post that Barnard suffered head, back and ankle injuries.
"Indications are the injures are serious, but not life-threatening," the department said in a statement.
Sweeny is a small town in western Brazoria County, with a population of less than 5,000.
