A Fort Myers man is dead after crashing into a parked car at a North Fort Myers gas station.

Jeremy Freeman, 30, died late Monday in the crash at North Cleveland Avenue and Evergreen Road. Witnesses pulled his 11-year-old daughter from the car.

Troopers say Freeman lost control of his SUV while changing lanes on Cleveland. The vehicle hit a traffic sign, then drove into a ditch, crashed into a light pole and eventually hit a car parked at the Sunoco gas station.

"I watched a vehicle go southbound into the ditch. When it went into the ditch, it went airborne, smacked a ... light pole. It ended up striking the car behind me, flipped over," said witness Brandon Jenkins.

"I pulled up to the accident, jumped out, seen the little girl screaming, yelling for her dad. I helped one of the guys get the girl out of the car, got her out of the car and I had my girlfriend take her and get her away from the accident scene," Jenkins said.

The little girl was injured, and Freeman was unresponsive. Another man tried to resuscitate him.

"He had a slight pulse, but by the time EMT made it, he was pronounced dead," Jenkins said.

He revealed unsettling information the little girl told him.

"She said he was drunk," he recalled. "It's terrifying to think that there are drivers who are drinking and driving with a kid in the car; someone that's helpless, they can't do anything."

David Rosciola saw the flashing lights at the station as he drove down Cleveland around 9 p.m. He saw the remnants Tuesday in daylight.

"The people surrounding here are very lucky that... like me or you or anyone could have been killed right there. It just goes to show you how quick things can happen," he said.

FHP reports neither Freeman nor his daughter were wearing seat belts. They're still investigating whether Freeman was under the influence at the time.

"People shouldn't drink and drive, that's the bottom line," Rosciola said. "Even if you have a little buzz going on because things can happen so fast."

Freeman's daughter was discharged from the hospital.

FDLE is handling the toxicology report, and it could take more than 30 days to get
