Rochester,MN : Suspect in crash allegedly broke into building on may, Tuesday 16th 2017

The man accused of running to a closed business after a two-car crash — then damaging the business — will make his initial appearance next week in Olmsted County District Court.

Corey Joe Hummel, 30, of LeRoy, has been charged with third-degree burglary, a felony; three gross misdemeanor counts of criminal vehicular operation; gross misdemeanor counts of hit and run and fourth-degree operating while under the influence of alcohol, as well as misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree criminal damage to property, reckless driving and failure to display registration plates.

He remains in custody in lieu of $5,000 conditional bail and is due back in court Tuesday.

Rochester police responded about 1:35 a.m. May 9 to the 2300 block of Marion Road for a report of a crash with injuries.

They found a 65-year-old woman with leg injuries, who told them this:

She was northbound on Marion Road when she saw a vehicle driving south strike a mailbox on the west shoulder, then correct its direction of travel and cross over into the northbound lane, the report says.

The woman moved into the southbound lane to avoid a collision, said Capt. John Sherwin, but the other driver — later identified as Hummel — returned to his own lane, striking the woman's vehicle on the passenger side.

Hummel left the scene before police arrived, the report says.

Officers noted a mailbox post and two mailboxes were lodged in the windshield of the van, the front passenger tire was completely broken away from the frame, fluid was flooding the roadway and its engine was smoking.

Paperwork inside the van indicated it had been sold the week before to Hummel, the complaint says.

At 2:19 a.m., officers responded to an alarm at a business in the 2400 block of Marion Road.

The front glass door had been broken with a metal sign, court documents say, and a fire extinguisher had just been sprayed inside the building.

Hummel was lying on his back in the foyer surrounded by broken ceiling tiles, the documents continue, indicating he'd torn down a portion of the ceiling.

After being medically cleared, Hummel was taken to jail. A warrant was obtained to collect blood, which was sent to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for chemical testing.
