Sutter, CA : Meridian man dies in fiery crash near Sutter on Thursday night, August 28, 2014
A 47-year-old Meridian man was killed Thursday night when the car he was driving struck a deer on Pass Road and collided with an embankment, the California Highway Patrol said.
The identity of the driver was not being released Friday morning pending toxicology reports and notification of next of kin, CHP spokeswoman Jodie Beck said.
The CHP said the victim was driving a 1986 Chevrolet Corvette about 9:15 p.m. on Pass Road east of Kellogg Road northwest of the community of Sutter when it struck the deer. The vehicle then left the road, struck a dirt embankment, overturned and caught fire.
Witnesses unsuccessfully tried to remove the victim before the vehicle became engulfed in flames, the report said.
