LONDONDERRY, NH : Windham teen pulls child from car involved in fatal crash on Friday, June 2, 2017
Londonderry, New Hampshire
It was just before 7 p.m. Friday when a car carrying two women and a young child crashed on the side of Interstate 93 in Londonderry, leaving a mother of two dead.
Marshal Pesatauro was driving just feet behind the car and immediately knew he had to do something.
"I saw a puff of dust and smoke kind of up ahead and then everyone slammed on their brakes," he said. "There was glass everywhere. One-hundred feet down the highway past the crash there was still glass."
The Windham High School senior said he quickly pulled over and ran to the wrecked car.
"There was a woman in the front. She was covered in blood and she was shouting, 'Get my baby! Get my baby,'" he said. "I grabbed the car seat out of the back and brought the baby up towards the road and then there was other people who came over to attend to the baby."
The child was flown to Boston Children's Hospital with serious injuries.
A female passenger, 21-year-old Karina Feliz of Bradford, Massachusetts, was taken to Elliot Hospital for minor injuries.
The driver, 22-year-old Julia Melendez of Haverhill, Massachusetts, was thrown from the car and did not survive.
Her brother told News 9 the mother of two loved her children and always put her family first.
Pesatauro said he was saddened to hear about Melendez's passing and offers his condolences.
The Melendez family has set up a memorial fund to help pay for Julia's funeral. If you would like to donate you can find the donation.
