CITRA, FL : Teen injured in ATV accident on Saturday, July 1, 2017

The teenager who was seriously injured Saturday when the All Terrain Vehicle he was riding crashed head-on into a tree has died.

The accident occurred when the teen “was just riding around” on a hard-top dirt road in the 2300 block of Northeast 165th Street in Citra, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

The 17-year-old boy, identified as Sean Stokes of Citra, was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center with head injuries.

Troopers said the boy was riding the 2004 ATV Yamaha Raptor westbound on Northeast 165th Street when it veered off the roadway and onto the south shoulder. The motorized vehicle then slammed into a tree that was among a group of trees along the south shoulder.

Officials said the boy was not wearing a helmet. It appeared that he was wearing a pair of goggles, authorities said.
