Porter County, IN : Trooper injured in five-vehicle crash on Toll Road Friday afternoon, May 13, 2016

An Indiana State Trooper was hurt in a crash involving five vehicles Friday afternoon on the Toll Road.

Around 1:20 p.m., the driver of a semi, Gary McDonald, 49 of Washington, Illinois, was westbound on I-80/90, just east of the Chesterton exit, when he hit the back of the car in front of him. McDonald said he’d glanced at his GPS and then his mirror, and when he looked up traffic was at a standstill.

McDonald tried to swerve but hit the back of an SUV driven by Britni Walter, 20, of Southfield, Michigan. Her SUV then hit a car driven by Scott Berkley, 61, of New Brighton, Pennsylvania. The impact caused Walter’s car to hit the guard rail and roll onto its driver’s side. Berkley’s car was pushed into the back of a semi pulling a tanker loaded with plastic.

After hitting Walter’s car, McDonald swerved to try to avoid impact barrels and hit the back of an ISP car driven by Sergeant William Jones, 43. He had been sitting facing westbound in the crossover with his emergency lights on to warn motorists of construction that was head. Traffic was backed up more than two miles in that area because of the construction.

McDonald was wearing his seat belt and was not hurt. He was cited for Unsafe Lane Movement and Following Too Closely.

Walter and her passenger were both wearing their seat belts and were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Berkley and his 22-year-old son, Colin Berkley, were both wearing seat belts and were also taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Sergeant Jones was wearing his seat belt and was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

All traffic wes bound was diverted off at the U.S. 421 exit while investigators reconstructed the crash and removed the vehicles. All lanes were re-opened at approximately 3:45 p.m.
