San Diego, CA : 41-year-old tow truck driver responding to a crash on Interstate 5 near Encinitas on Sunday, December 28, 2014

A local tow truck driver is in the hospital after being hit by a suspected drunken driver on Interstate 5 in Encinitas. He was trying to clear the scene of another crash when he was struck.

California Highway Patrol officers say the original crash occurred at about 2 a.m. Sunday on northbound I-5 near Santa Fe Drive. Investigators say the person who caused the crash was in a black Mustang and ran off.

A tow truck driver was called out to get the cars off the freeway when a suspected drunken driver slammed into him as he was hooking up a car.

Officers gave a sobriety test to the driver, who was handcuffed and taken into custody.

"The driver of that vehicle was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, which is a felony," said CHP Sgt. Brad Denham.

The tow truck driver suffered broken bones and injuries to his leg.

Officers are still looking for the driver who caused the initial crash. Anyone who has any information is asked to call the CHP.
