Daytona Beach, FL : Daytona Beach police: Carjacker trying to flee crashed into tree on April 28th 2014
A Volusia County man with a lengthy rap sheet full of thefts and robberies is once again in jail.
But he's lucky he wasn't killed during the latest crime he's accused of pulling.
The suspect, 30-year-old Johnny Quatto, had an abrupt end to his attempted escape as the car he stole crashed into the woods just off Vine Street in Daytona Beach.
Quatto's latest crime spree began Thursday afternoon with the attempted hold-up of the Icy Paradise on Mason Avenue.
Daytona Beach police said he shoved a gun towards Jeffrey Brunner, ordering the employee to give him all the money.
Instead, Brunner tripped an alarm and police were quickly on the scene.
Quatto then ran off, running into Matthew Taylor and his 15-year-old son entering their car.
Quatto pulled the gun on them; a gun which turned out to be a pellet gun but looks very much like a small-caliber handgun. Quatto demanded they drive him to escape police.
Taylor remained calm and was able to convince Quatto to let the teenager go before they drove away.
They headed towards Vine Street which is where Taylor, who finally had enough, stopped the car and made a break for it.
Quatto took the wheel and sped through the neighborhood before crashing the car.
Emergency crews had to cut him out of the wreckage before he was rushed to an area hospital.
It's apparent in his latest mug shot he suffered an obvious neck injury.
Johnny Harold Quatto has been charged with armed robbery, carjacking, aggravated assault and with putting a child in danger.
Quatto is expected to have a first appearance in front of a judge this afternoon.
