Silver Springs,FL : Silver Springs teen arrested after fatal crash on January, Wednesday 3rd 2018

A 17-year-old Silver Springs boy has been arrested in connection with a June traffic crash that left his teenager passenger dead.

The driver, whose name is withheld because of his age, faces charges of vehicular homicide and no valid driver’s license. A Florida Highway Patrol report says he was driving recklessly.

The State Attorney’s Office has not yet decided how it will handle the case against the driver, who turns 18 on Jan. 31. Prosecutors said they are waiting for the final report from FHP.

The driver turned himself in last month on the charges from FHP and is expected to face a judge in a hearing sometime next week.

Killed in the single-vehicle crash was Cameron Tyler Nativio, a 15-year-old former student at Lake Weir High School. He was in the front passenger seat.

Friends and family members described the victim as funny and caring.

On June 7, the 17-year-old was driving a 2003 Ford Taurus north on Southeast 183rd Avenue Road, according to an arrest report from FHP Cpl. Wallace Dill. The veteran traffic homicide investigator noted that it had been raining that afternoon and the roadway and grass shoulders of the road were wet.

The driver quickly accelerated and “intentionally turned the steering wheel left and right multiple times causing (the car) to fishtail,” Dill states in the report. The car continued to speed and fishtailed for about two-tenths of a mile. The driver lost control. The car veered across the double-yellow center line and spun counterclockwise.

It traveled more than 83 feet, and its right front side struck a tree on the west side of the road. The car rotated around the tree and came to rest against it.

Prior to the wreck, Dill estimated, the car was going 46 to 52 mph. The speed limit is 35 mph.

People who witnessed the crash said at the time that they did what they could to save both boys. Residents along the road said drivers treat it like a drag strip.

The driver had never been issued a driver’s license and “was driving recklessly” before losing control of the vehicle, according to Dill’s report. He acknowledged that he was driving and that he never had a driver’s license.
