Tangipahoa Parish, LA : Avery G. Campbell 22, killed in fatal hit-and-run crash on U.S. 51 on Monday, April 27, 2015
Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana
An unidentified man in Tangipahoa Parish was killed Monday night after being hit by a car on U.S. 51, state police said. The fatal incident remains under investigation.
The incident happened just after 11 p.m. Monday north of the U.S. 51 intersection with Louisiana 1064, according to State Police.
A Nissan Altima driven by Avery G. Campbell 22, of Amite, was southbound on U.S. 51 while the man, clad in dark clothes, was walking northbound. Campbell braked and tried to avoid the pedestrian when he came into view, but the front of Campbell's car hit the walker and threw him into the northbound lane, State Police said.
As the pedestrian lay in the northbound lane he was hit again, this time by an unidentified car traveling north on U.S. 51, according to troopers.
That unknown vehicle then made a U-turn and bolted the scene going south on U.S. 51. State Police described the hit-and-run car as an early 2000s model brown compact.
The dual collisions killed the pedestrian. Troopers were still trying to identify the victim Tuesday (April 28).
Campbell voluntarily took a breathalyzer, which he passed, State Police said. Blood was also drawn and sent to the State Police crime lab.
There have been more than a dozen fatal pedestrian crashes in Louisiana already in 2015. State Police noted simple precautions like wearing reflective material, avoiding distractions and walking a safe distance from travel lanes could prevent most of these deaths.
