Remington, IN :Alcohol may have been a factor in fatal crash on US 231 on Monday, June 29th 2015

Indiana State Police are investigating after a two-vehicle crash on an I-65 exit ramp left one dead and two others seriously injured.The crash happened just after 1 p.m. Monday on the Interstate 65 exit ramp to U.S. 231 in Remington, Indiana. Trooper Andrew Rasala said a car that exited I-65, at mile-marker 205, ran a stop sign and was struck by a pickup truck that was headed north on U.S. 231.The truck, owned by a Rensselaer company and driven by 19-year-old Joseph Linback of Brook, Ind., was hauling a trailer loaded with two John Deere Gators. After the collision, both vehicles ended up in a grassy shoulder area off U.S. 231. Both utility vehicles were thrown from the trailer in the process — one landed in the grass and the other in the road.Linback was taken to Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.However, the vehicle’s occupants did not fair as well. Driver 43-year-old Benjamin Griffin and his 8-year-old daughter, both from New Lenox, Illinois, were taken to Jasper County Hospital with critical injuries. Both were airlifted from there to other locations. The driver was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Illinois, and the child was transported to the University of Chicago Pediatric Hospital in Chicago.Griffin’s friend, 45-year-old Michele Pavesich, was the third person in the vehicle. Pavesich was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma by the Jasper County Coroner’s Office.Investigators believe that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. Toxicology results are pending on the 43-year-old driver.The interstate ramps remained open, but U.S. 231 was down to one lane while investigators were on scene.News 18 will continue to follow this story, and we will have updates online and in our broadcasts as soon as details become available.
