Bakersfield, CA : One person killed, another injured in fiery crash north of Highway 166 on Tuesday, May 10, 2016

A fiery crash north of Highway 166 late Tuesday killed one person and badly injured another.

California Highway Patrol officers came upon a vehicle in a farm field about a mile west of Highway 99 while on routine patrol at 11:47 p.m., a news release said. A fire was quickly spreading into the vehicle’s passenger compartment.

While one officer tried extinguishing the fire, another removed a passenger from the vehicle. Officers performed first aid on the passenger, the release said, and discovered the driver had died upon being thrown from the vehicle.

The driver was later identified as 24-year-old Nelson Campos, of Bakersfield.

The crash remains under investigation.
