QUAKER CITY, OH : Trooper administers Narcan to driver in crash on Wednesday, September 6, 2017
An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper administered two doses of Narcan to a driver suspected of overdosing on heroin following an accident on Leatherwood Road near the Guernsey-Belmont county line late Wednesday night.
The driver, 37-year-old Chad Anderson of Barnesville, was transported by Quaker City EMS to Barnesville Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and the suspected overdose.
A nursing supervisor at Barnesville Hospital said he was unable to provide information regarding Anderson’s condition prior to press time. The inquiry was referred to other hospital staff available after 8 a.m.
The highway patrol reported Anderson confessed to using heroin prior to the accident.
According to reports, a passerby on Leatherwood Road (Route 265) discovered Anderson unresponsive in the driver’s seat of a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser that came to rest over an embankment at approximately 11:25 p.m.
The patrol reported Anderson was eastbound on Leatherwood Road when he drove off the right side of the roadway and struck a former utility pole that was being used as a fence post.
The impact caused minor damage to the PT Cruiser.
Anderson’s foot was reportedly still on the gas pedal and the transmission was in reverse, causing the tires to slowly spin although the vehicle was not moving. Authorities were able to move Anderson’s foot and place the vehicle in park to prevent further injuries or damage.
Due to the location near the county line, troopers from the St. Clairsville and Cambridge posts were dispatched to the scene. A trooper with the St. Clairsville post was the first to arrive and administered the Narcan doses to Anderson.
The trooper reported Anderson awoke and confessed to the heroin use, as well as the purchase of Xanax pills that were found in his possession. Anderson reportedly told the trooper he purchased the two drugs at the same time.
Quaker City medical personnel and firefighters assisted at the scene in addition to transporting Anderson to the Barnesville hospital.
Anderson was cited for operating a vehicle while under the influence and failure to control. He was also charged with possession of drugs for the Xanax pills found in the vehicle.
The incident remained under investigation by the patrol’s St. Clairsville post.
