Marion Township, MI : Trucker killed in loading accident on beet farm in Marion Township on Monday, November 17, 2014
Authorities in Michigan's Thumb say that a 52-year-old truck driver was killed in an accident while waiting to pick up a load of sugar beets.
The Sanilac County sheriff's department says the accident happened about 6:50 p.m. Monday at a farm in Marion Township. It's about 80 miles north-northeast of Detroit.
Lt. Charlene Washkevich says that Rusty Kiehl of Jackson got out of his tractor-trailer, which was waiting to be loaded with sugar beets. She says he stepped between two trailers that another trucker was driving, and that driver pulled forward without realizing Kiehl was there.
The lieutenant says the second truck crushed Kiehl, and he died at the scene. She says the accident remains under investigation.
