Sacramento, CA : One dead after school bus, van collide head-on near Stevinson on Friday, January 27th 2017

One person was killed Friday morning in a head-on collision between a school bus and van on Highway 165 near Stevinson, the California Highway Patrol reported. No students were on the bus.

The collision was first reported by CHP at 5:58 a.m. The driver of the van died, the Merced Sun-Star reported. There was no other occupant in the vehicle.

CHP officer Dean Emehiser told the Sun-Star the bus, contracted with Merced County Office of Education, was headed southbound on Highway 165 when a GMC Safari headed northbound turned into the bus’ lane.

The bus was headed toward Los Banos, said Nathan Quevedo, a spokesman for MCOE.

The bus driver was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Fog did not appear to be a factor in the crash, Emehiser said.
