Antioch, CA : Driver flees CHP, crashes into 2 telephone poles on Wednesday, August 24, 2016

A driver fleeing the California Highway Patrol crashed into two telephone poles on a city street and was hospitalized Wednesday, the agency said.

Officers arrested 29-year-old Dijon Ammons, who went to a hospital in an ambulance and was treated for cuts and scrapes, according to Antioch police.

The incident began when an officer pulled over the vehicle for speeding around 4:10 p.m. on eastbound Highway 4 just west of the Hillcrest Avenue exit, according to CHP spokesman Officer Brandon Correia.

Ammons initially stopped after making a left onto Hillcrest after the exit, then accelerated and fled after the officer parked.

The officer chased the vehicle for about a quarter-mile, then stopped, the agency said.

The suspect's vehicle ran a red light and nearly hit several other cars while racing through the intersection of Hillcrest and E. 18th Street, according to the CHP and social media accounts of the incident. The CHP did not say how fast Ammons was driving during the attempted escape.

Ammons hit a dip on Hillcrest and wound up airborne, according to social media accounts. He then crashed into two telephone poles and two parked cars at the intersection of Hillcrest and S. Lake Drive, the CHP said.

Antioch police are handling the investigation into the crash.
