Annapolis, MD : Teen lost control of his car before fatal crash on May, Tuesday, 23rd 2017
Norman White had been saving since last year to buy a car, juggling school and sports along with working for his parents’ businesses before all of his effort finally paid off.
Two months ago, the 17-year-old bought a green 1999 Toyota Camry and outfitted it with new tires that his Nana bought as his birthday gift in April.
“He was so proud when he got his car,” said White’s aunt, Dollie White.
Shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, as he was heading home from work at Pizza Hut, the Gwynn Park High School junior lost control of the Camry and hit a tree in a crash that killed him, according to police and family.
Police continue to investigate the cause of the single-car crash near Temple Hill Road and Woodelves Way in Clinton.Plans for senior photos, college and a promising scholastic football career were cut short.
“He wanted to go to school on a football scholarship, which he very well could have done,” said the teen’s cousin, Cherry White.
White was about six miles from the home where Wednesday his family gathered, mourning the teen who recently had been baptized.
Dollie White said her nephew was a loving, hard-working and family-oriented young man.
White was a “sneakerhead” who would go to sneaker conventions and had so many shoes that it looked like he owned a store, his aunt said. “He always had a different pair” and always the most current style. “If you expect to see something brand new, you would expect to see it on his feet,” she said.
Gwynn Park football coach Danny Hayes said that although White was only 175 pounds, he’d go up against 300-pound players as an offensive lineman for the varsity high school football team.
“Norman was one of the biggest little guys that I’ve known since the 20 years I’ve been coaching here at Gwynn Park,” Hayes said. “We called him ‘Stormin’ Norman.’ ”
Hayes said White was always ready for a challenge, constantly saying, “Bring it my way, coach,” “I got ‘em” and “You can rely on me.”
“Norman was a very shy type of kid, but basically when it came time to do what you need to do, you can always expect Norman to be where you need him to be,” Hayes said.
White was born at Washington Hospital Center on April 23, 2000. Lue A. Culbreath said she was on her way to church Easter Sunday when she heard her grandson was soon to be born.
“He was never a problem,” Culbreath said. “He was a good boy, a great kid developing into becoming a beautiful person.”
White was always working at some job and got his entrepreneurial spirit from his mother and father, Cherry White said. In addition to working at Pizza Hut, he helped run the family’s photography, video and DJ businesses.
