Rock County, WI : One person killed in pickup-semi collision on Highway 14 East in the town of La Prairie on Thursday morning, February 18, 2016
Authorities aren't yet saying what caused a pickup truck to swerve into oncoming traffic, leading to a death and the closure of Highway 14 east of Janesville on Thursday morning.
The deceased's name has not yet been released.
The highway was closed and re-opened around 1 p.m.
A caller to 911 at 6:22 a.m. said a pickup truck was causing other vehicles to take evasive action. Moments later, the pickup crashed head-on into an oncoming semitrailer truck on the highway near Emerald Grove Road, according to a Rock County Sheriff's Office news release.
The crash caused the semi to roll into the ditch on the eastbound side of the highway, while the pickup spun and came to rest in the westbound lane, according to the release.
The pickup driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies and Clinton firefighters removed the semi's driver from the cab. Driver Richard Vogeler, 67, of Rockford, Illinois, was conscious and taken to St. Mary's Janesville Hospital with unknown internal injuries, according to the release.
Vogeler was wearing a seat belt. The deceased driver was not, the release stated.
The sheriff's office's accident-reconstruction unit investigated.
All lanes of Highway 14 traffic in both directions were blocked because of the crash, according to a Wisconsin Department of Transportation traffic alert.
