former member of the Jackson High School girls swim team was killed in an automobile accident last week.
Shannon Prendergast, a 2015 graduate and four-year swim team member, died Tuesday
At about 5:30 a.m., Prendergast’s car struck a pickup truck that had flipped over after the driver swerved to avoid an animal in the roadway, according to a Washington State Patrol press release. The pickup truck hit a guardrail and ended up blocking the eastbound lanes. The driver of the pickup truck was able to exit his vehicle.
Prendergast, 20 of Everett, died as a result of the collision.
Jackson swim coach Drew Whorley wrote that the death of Prendergast, who was a student at Washington State University, left a deep hole the hearts of the community.
“As a swimmer, Shannon was part of our 2014 state championship team and a recipient of the Timberwolf (coach’s) award,” Whorley wrote in a social media posting. “Her attitude, work ethic and commitment to her team left a lasting impression on everyone she swam with and those who had the privilege of coaching her.”
