PHOENIX, AZ : 1 arrested, another flees after stolen car crashes on Sunday, January 1st 2017
Residents in one Phoenix neighborhood are waking up to a large police presence.
Authorities are searching for a suspect connected to an early-morning car chase.
At around 2:30 a.m., a trooper with the Arizona Department of Public Safety saw a motorist driving erratically. The trooper tried to pull the driver over but the motorist fled.
"The trooper ran the license plate on the vehicle and the vehicle returned it was stolen," DPS Capt. Tim Mason said.
The suspect made some rapid turns and the trooper lost sight of it in the area of North 27th Avenue and Camelback Road.
The vehicle ultimately hit a light pole, flipping and rolling into a parking lot. Pictures show debris was scattered for more than 70 feet.
"The driver and passenger bailed from the vehicle. They ran south from Camelback in the 35th Avenue area into the neighborhood," Mason said.
DPS and Phoenix police officers set up a perimeter.
"After about 10 minutes or so, the driver actually came out of the perimeter and was engaged in a short foot pursuit with officers before being taken into custody," Mason said.
The driver suffered some minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment and observation.
"Impairment appears to be a factor for the crash," Mason said.
The vehicle was taken during a home burglary on Monday. No details about the break-in were available.
A passenger in the vehicle remains on the loose.
"It's likely that individual is still in the area," Mason said.
Police dogs and the Phoenix Police helicopter were brought in to track to track down the second suspect.
