A 21-year-old Mattoon woman died in a single-vehicle accident Saturday evening, according to Illinois State Police.
Coles County Coroner Ed Schniers said Sunday that Vanessa R. Worstell, who was a passenger in the vehicle that crashed, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to state police, the incident occurred at 6:51 p.m. Saturday on U.S. Route 45 approximately a fourth of a mile south of County Road 1800 N between Mattoon and Arcola.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police report that a black 2003 Ford sedan driven by a 22-year-old Mattoon woman initially left the northbound lane of the roadway into the northbound ditch for an unknown reason. The driver then overcorrected and the auto came back onto the roadway, skidding sideways across the lanes.
The driver lost control of the vehicle and it entered the northbound ditch a second time, where it struck the embankment and began to roll over multiple times, state police report.
Worstell was partially ejected from the auto. The driver was flown by helicopter to an area hospital, according to police.
Three others -- a 28-year-old Greenup man, a 22-year-old Mattoon man and a 1-year-old Greenup boy -- were in the car also. None of them were reported to have been sent to a hospital. The 28-year-old and the 1-year-old were wearing a seat belt and child restraint, respectively.
Police reported that Worstell did not have a seat belt on at the time of the accident; the driver reportedly was wearing a seat belt.
The driver was cited for improper lane usage due to the accident.
The roadway was closed until approximately 10:30 p.m. Saturday as emergency personnel worked at the scene.
