Irwinton, GA : 2-month-old child killed and three others seriously injured in a two-car crash on Ga. 57 in Wilkinson County early Thursday morning, May 5, 2016
A 2-month-old child was killed and three others were seriously injured in a two-car crash on Ga. 57 in Wilkinson County early Thursday morning.
Jamecia Stokes, 20, of Wallace Drive in Macon, was driving with her children, ages 2 and 2 months, about 8 a.m. when she crossed the center line and collided head-on with a car driven by Maureen Lord, of Gordon, Wilkinson County Sheriff Richard Chatman said. The crash occurred about three miles east of the intersection of Ga. 57 and Ga. 18.
The children were recovered from the car, but Stokes and Lord had to be extricated. All four people were rushed to the Medical Center, Navicent Health in Macon.
Two-month old Promise Hodges was pronounced dead at the hospital about 10:30 a.m., Chatman said. Stokes’s 2-year-old son sustained serious head injuries and was flown to Atlanta’s Egleston Hospital for Children on Thursday afternoon.
The 2-year old “was in the front passenger seat, and the baby was in the back,” Chatman said. “No one was wearing any restraining devices. ... I honestly think it would have made a big difference had they been properly restrained in the rear (of the car).”
Because of serious internal injuries, Stokes was unable to tell authorities what led to the crash, Chatman said. Lord also sustained serious internal and lower-body injuries. Chatman said Lord had surgery Thursday afternoon.
