Fredericksburg,VA : Fatal Sparta Road accident leaves two children motherless on February, Saturday 3rd 2018
The young woman who was killed in a car accident in Caroline County Saturday night had two young children.
Rebecca McDonald’s 6-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter are at the home in Fredericksburg they shared with McDonald and her best friend of 15 years, Katie Ackard.
“It’s just now kind of hitting them,” Ackard said. “So they’re having trouble sleeping. They’re both home from school, and Elena’s getting sick.”
She said McDonald’s kids were her “number one.”
“They were her heart and soul,” she said. “They were everything to her.”
McDonald, 27, and her boyfriend of two years, Remington Walton, 25, were heading with their friend Brian Bixler Jr., 27, to Bixler’s home in Sparta after having dinner at Roma’s Italian Restaurant in Bowling Green Saturday evening.
It was just after 10 p.m. when the car they were traveling in, driven by Walton, ran off Sparta Road near Maracossic Drive, overcorrected and veered off the road on the left, rolled to its passenger side and struck a tree.
The driver, Walton, and back seat passenger Bixler were not wearing seatbelts. Bixler was ejected from the car.
McDonald, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was wearing her seatbelt and was trapped in the car when it rolled.
Days after the accident, friends and family of the victims are struggling to process the sudden absence of their loved ones.
McDonald’s friends described her as funny, daring and generous.
Ackard said she remembers the first time she met McDonald, on the bus on the way to Battlefield Middle School 15 years ago. McDonald and a friend squeezed over so Ackard and the drum set she was carrying could sit down with them.
She said McDonald, who was a stay-at-home mom, loved “anything Alice and Wonderland” and all kinds of music.
“Music was life to her,” Ackard said. “She was the one person I knew who didn’t have a certain genre, she listened to all of it. One minute it would be rap and then some gospel song.”
Another good friend of 10 years, Don Semsey, said McDonald was the kind of friend you could have a huge fight with and know it wouldn’t end the friendship.
He said McDonald was the one he would go talk to if he was feeling depressed and that once she let him stay at her house with his girlfriend and their year-old baby for two months when they needed a place to live. She never asked for rent.
