Vernal, UT : Two women seriously hurt involving truck in vernal crash on Thursday, July 17, 2014

Two women were seriously hurt Thursday when a pickup truck turned into the path of the motorcycle they were riding, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The women were riding west on U.S. 40 just before 7 p.m. when the 16-year-old driver of a pickup made a left turn from 2500 West to go east on the highway, UHP Sgt. Brett Gehring said.

"The driver of the truck apparently didn't see the motorcycle," Gehring said, noting that troopers were still in the preliminary stages of their investigation.

Both women, who are believed to be from the Heber City area, were wearing helmets, Gehring said. They both suffered compound leg fractures and were taken by ambulance to Ashley Regional Medical Center, the sergeant said.

The 37-year-old passenger was later flown by medical helicopter to University Hospital in critical condition, troopers said. The 44-year-old who was driving the motorcycle was flown by plane to a Salt Lake area hospital in stable condition, according to investigators.

The 16-year-old boy who hit the women was not injured, troopers said.

The names of the pickup truck driver and the motorcyclists have not been released.

The crash closed U.S. 40 in both directions for about 30 minutes.
