A 48-year-old Fort Wayne man died early Tuesday when he was crushed in an industrial accident at the BF Goodrich tire plant near Woodburn, authorities said.

Sean Redden died about 3 a.m. from multiple crush injuries because of an industrial press accident, the Allen County coroner's office said.

Redden died at the scene, the coroner said. The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration will likely investigate.

Eric S. Bruner, director of external communications for Michelin North America, said the death occurred during a maintenance procedure.

“We are extremely sad to report that an employee at the BFGoodrich Tires facility in Fort Wayne died early this morning,” a company statement said. “Deputies from the Allen County Sheriff's Department and other emergency crews responded to the incident, and federal authorities were notified.”

“We are in the beginning phase of an investigation of the factors that led to this tragic event, but our primary focus at this time is on the employee's family and other people who work at the site,” the statement continued. “On the company's behalf, we offer our deepest sympathies to the family during this time of grief.”

The plant makes passenger-vehicle tires under the BF Goodrich Tires brand, which is part of Michelin North America. About 1,600 people are employed at the plant, the company said Tuesday.
