Dummerston, VT : 88-year-old woman fatally injures after 3-vehicle crash on Route 30 in Dummerston on Tuesday afternoon, April 26, 2016

An 88-year-old woman, fatally injured in a three-vehicle crash on Route 30 Tuesday afternoon, became unresponsive and was unable to be revived while she was being taken by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass., state police said.

State police identified the victim as Charlene Higgins of Newfane. She was initially taken to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Baystate.

The accident occurred about 3:30 p.m. as Steven Morin, 33, of Richmond, N.H., drove north in a 2005 Freightliner, flatbed truck, according to state police.

Morin struck the rear of a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, also northbound, driven by Dean Tkaczyk, 54, of Dummerston.

The collision with Tkaczyk's vehicle pushed it into the southbound lane and into the path of a 2002 Lincoln, Continental, driven by Andrea Fields, 48, of Newfane.

Those two vehicles then collided. Higgins was a passenger in the Lincoln.

Tkaczyk suffered an injured shoulder and Fields suffered an injured neck

Members of the West Dummerston Volunteer Fire Department, Brattleboro Fire Department, and Rescue Inc. all assisted at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.
