A driver hit and killed a bicyclist Sunday night in southwest Charlotte.
Police said Vung Vu was riding a bicycle south on South Tryon Street. The crash happened around 11:45 p.m. near Carowinds Boulevard.
Vu was hit by a 1996 Jeep Cherokee driven by Jonathan Shaver that was also traveling south on South Tryon Street.
Vu hit the windshield of the Jeep before being thrown to the ground.
Shaver did not stop at the scene of the crash, police said.
He went home to Clover South Carolina, before calling 911 to report his involvement in the crash.
Shaver voluntarily returned to the crash scene with the Clover police.
Shaver was arrested on charges of involuntary manslaughter, felony hit-and-run, driving while impaired, registration and insurance violations.
Speed does not appear to be a factor in this crash. Alcohol use for the bicyclist is suspected, police said.
