Sanford, FL : Bicyclist killed in hit-and-run in Sanford early Friday morning, June 10, 2016
Police in Sanford want to find the driver who hit and killed a bicyclist and took off early Friday morning.
It happened in the Celery Estates neighborhood, along Celery Avenue at Brisson Avenue, just before 2 a.m.
The victim was identified as Mark Hampton, 59. His fiancee, Wendy Hernandez, told WESH 2 News he would regularly ride his bike in the early-morning hours.
"To let him die on the side of the road like that, like nothing," Hernandez said.
Hernandez said she just felt something was wrong in the middle of the night. Then, not far from where she lives, she learned a man on a bike had been hit and killed.
Her worst fears were realized.
"They left him to die. Mark was healthy, he could have survived something like that," Hernandez said.
A roommate of the victim said, "I couldn't believe it was him, because he was so used to riding a bike like that, coming home all the time."
"Because they didn't care enough to stop and check, they left him to die on the side of the road. It just doesn't make any sense," Hernandez said.
Police said the driver was in a light-colored Nissan Versa. Police said there is significant damage to the passenger side of the car.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Sanford Police Department.
