Oak Ridge, TN : Bicyclist identified in fatal crash on Sunday, February 19th 2017
The Oak Ridge man killed in the Sunday afternoon accident at state Highway 58 and Blair Road has been identified.
Verne Ephram Gilbert, 85, 111 Newton Lane, was killed in the crash, according to obituary information submitted to The Oak Ridger by his family. A native of Los Angeles, he moved to Oak Ridge with his family in 1970. He had a private practice as an infectious disease specialist and was an internal medicine physician at Baptist Hospital in Knoxville "where he cared for thousands of patients in East Tennessee."
The family also stated in the obituary that Gilbert was an avid biker and hiking hobbyist. "He was in great shape and was pursuing his love of cycling," the family wrote in the obituary. His complete obituary will appear in The Oak Ridger on Tuesday at at oakridger.com tonight.
According to the city of Oak Ridge news release, Oak Ridge Police Department officers responded to the crash at approximately 1:50 p.m. Sunday. The crash involved Gilbert, who was on a bicycle, and a small sport utility vehicle driven by Wanda Lowery, 74, of Kingston, who was not injured.
"The crash is still under investigation and the decision to file charges has not been made,:" according to the release.
U.S. Department of Energy employees who were nearby when the crash occurred helped in providing immediate medical aid to Gilbert. The Oak Ridge Fire Department and the Anderson County Emergency Medical Service also responded to the scene to provide medical aid. The Clinton Police Department responded to the scene to help with at-scene crash reconstruction. The Roane County Sheriff's Department and the Oak Ridge Public Works Department responded to the scene to help with traffic control. Roane County District Attorney General Russell Johnson also responded to the scene to assist with the crash investigation.
