An 83-year-old Valparaiso man died and his wife was seriously injured Monday in a two-car crash at the intersection of U.S. 30 and County Road 375 West.
Dead is Juan G. Soto.*
An initial investigation indicates a green 2014 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Jesse Hummel, 19, of Crown Point, was traveling eastbound on U.S. 30, approaching the intersection when a beige four-door 2003 Buick driven by Soto pulled out in front of Hummel's vehicle, police said. Hummel was uninjured.
Soto was unresponsive at the scene. He was transported to Porter Regional Hospital before being pronounced dead.
Soto's wife, Lilliam Soto, 83, was a passenger in the vehicle and was transported to Porter Regional Hospital and then airlifted to South Bend Memorial with what police termed life-threatening internal injuries.
According to the Porter County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Sgt. Jamie Erow, traffic was restricted to one lane for both eastbound and westbound lanes as the Porter County Accident Reconstruction team worked to investigate the accident.
