Honolulu, HI : Driver killed in fiery crash on H-3 freeway early Wednesday morning, January 7, 2015

Honolulu police are investigating the death of the driver of a vehicle that crashed and caught on fire on the H-3 freeway early Wednesday morning.

Lt. Carlene Lau, Honolulu Police Department traffic division spokeswoman, said the driver of the 2005 Nissan pickup truck crashed into the medial barrier in the Kailua-bound lane of the H-3 freeway just after 4 a.m.

The truck caught on fire and the driver was unable to get out of the vehicle because the door was jammed against the concrete medial barrier.

Capt. James Todd, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman, said when a fire engine arrived at the scene near the Hawaiian Cement Company plant, the truck was engulfed in flames. Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 4:20 a.m. and discovered the body.

Police said the body was burned beyond recognition.

It will be up to the medical examiner to determine the gender and identity of the victim, Lau said.

Police have initially classified the case as a traffic fatality.

Police closed all Kaneohe-bound lanes at the H-3 freeway offramp from the Moanalua Freeway just before 5 a.m. and reopened some lanes by 7 a.m. All lanes reopened by 8 a.m. after police cleared the scene and towed the truck away.
