Sheffield Twp, OH : Two people injured in North Ridge Road crash on Tuesday, June 28, 2016
A two-vehicle crash sent two women to the hospital Tuesday.
The crash between a Chevrolet Astrovan and a Chevrolet Malibu occurred on North Ridge Road just west of Lake Avenue shortly before 5 p.m.
The Ohio Highway Patrol said the Astrovan was driven by Memory Babics, 58, who was traveling east on North Ridge Road when she went left of center and struck Genevieve Perkins, 71, who was driving wast in the Malibu. Drugs or alcohol are not considered to be factors in the crash, the patrol said, and Babics was believed to have critical injuries while Perkins had serious injuries.
Both of the vehicles were totaled and gas and other fluids had leaked on to the pavement. North Ridge Road was closed by both the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio Highway Patrol as the crash scene was investigated and the debris was cleaned up.
Elyria Township fire captain Art Meade said both drivers had to be extracted from their vehicles. He said the two women were first taken University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center and then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.
“This was full air bag deployment and both windshields are spidered,” Meade said. “Just by sheer damage alone you can see this was a bad crash. Both women had to be extricated and there is gas leaking all over the place.”
Nearby resident Audrey Nagy stood in the street helping direct traffic to turn around in the westbound lane of North Ridge Road after the crash occurred. Nagy said she heard a loud crash and it didn’t even sound like either driver had time to hit the brakes.
“This is just such a bad place,” she said of the stretch of road. “We’ve had lots of accidents over here.”
