A driver is dead after their car crashed and caught fire in north Charlotte Wednesday evening.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say they were called to the 2900 block of Boxmeer Drive where they found a 1997 Mazda MX-5 Miata that had run off the road, struck and embankment and caught fire. Police say the driver in the car was pronounced dead on scene, around 6:54 p.m.
The driver was the only person in the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved.
The crash remains under investigation. CMPD says speed does not appear to be a factor, but detectives are working to determine if alcohol played a role.
The driver's name has not been released.
