Southbridge, MA : Former Southbridge high school sports star killed in one car crash on Saturday, December 20, 2014

A 21-year-old Southbridge man was killed and two others injured when the car they were riding in left the road and slammed into a tree Saturday. Southbridge police said Jaime Ortiz was sitting in the front passenger seat when the car slid off Pleasant Street and crashed into the tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:30 a.m. crash. The Worcester Telegram&Gazette reported that the driver of the car, 23-year-old Michael Garrido and another passenger, William Santa, 46, were taken to Harrington Hospital for initial treatment, then transferred to UMass Memorial Medical Center with injuries. Southbridge police and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section are investigating the crash. Initial information indicates that speed may have been a factor police said. Ortiz played football and basketball at Southbridge High School and went on to play football at Westfield State College for a season.
