Johnstown, PA : Wrong-way driver caused fatal crash on Monday, January, 8th 2018

A wrong-way driver caused a three-vehicle crash Monday evening that killed a Bedford County woman, according to state police.

Ryan J. Karns, 34, was driving south in the northbound lane of U.S. Route 220 at around 5:50 p.m. Monday, passing other vehicles in a no-passing zone, according to a crash report issued Tuesday by the state police in Bedford.

As Karns attempted to re-enter the southbound lane, his Chevrolet pickup truck collided with a northbound Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Jennifer S. Kania, according to the report. As a result, the Chrysler rolled over and landed on its driver's side.

Kania, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Karns was not injured, but his two passengers – Stephanie M. Baxter, 34, and a 5-year-old boy, both of Dunlo – sustained minor injuries. All three occupants of the pickup truck were taken to UPMC Bedford Memorial, according to the report.

During the crash sequence, Karns' pickup truck also collided with a vehicle driven by Phillip Yates, 37, of Mount Savage, Maryland. Neither Yates nor his passenger – William E. Baer, 36, of Frostburg, Maryland – was injured, according to the report.

Each of the adults involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt, and the 5-year-old boy in Karns' pickup truck was strapped into a child safety seat, according to the report.

The crash happened in Bedford Township, approximately one mile north of the intersection of Route 220 and Cumberland Road. The state police investigation into the crash is ongoing.
