South Thomaston, ME : Police charge Rockland driver after chase, crash on Tuesday afternoon, Oct 27, 2015

A Rockland man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after authorities said he tried to elude police and ended up crashing the vehicle.

Brandon Demmons, 21, was charged with driving to endanger, attempting to elude an officer and speeding, according to Knox County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Tim Carroll. Demmons later was released on bail.

The incident began at 3:20 p.m. when Deputy John Hansen was operating a radar check of motorists near the Gilford Butler School. Hansen reportedly saw a pickup truck traveling at 38 mph in a 15-mph zone.

Hansen pulled out behind the truck and turned on the cruiser’s blue lights to pull the vehicle over, the chief deputy said. The driver seemed to slow the truck as if to pull over, but then sped off onto Dublin Road, according to the chief deputy.

The driver lost control as he made a 90-degree turn at a sharp corner, went on the opposite side of the road and then crossed the road again, traveling across a person’s yard and striking a well house on the property. The truck accelerated and traveled back onto the road, crossing the road two more times before rolling on its side, striking a rock wall and coming to a rest next to a cluster of trees.

Demmons and his passenger, Joell Fogg, 48, of Rockland, were not injured.

Lt. Reginald Walker said the truck, valued at $9,000, was destroyed.

South Thomaston Fire Department also was called to the scene of the crash.
