Gainesville, FL : 6-year-old boy killed and baby critically injured in a head-on collision Sunday on State Road 26 in a north Florida on Sunday afternoon, March 27, 2016
A 6-year-old boy has died and a baby is in critical condition following a head-on collision Sunday afternoon that involved nine people, five of whom were children.
Steven Morton, of Gainesville, died at a hospital after the crash, Gainesville Police Department spokesman Officer Ben Tobias said. The boy was a passenger in a 2006 Toyota Corolla that was one of three cars damaged in the accident.
Alachua County and Gainesville Fire Rescue rushed to the scene of the crash, which happened near Gum Root Swamp, GFR Assistant Chief Michael Cowart said. Steven and the other eight people who were injured were taken to University of Florida Health Shands Hospital.
Among the four children who survived the crash, three had serious injuries, according to the police. One of the adults also was seriously hurt.
Tobias said Faith Swilley, a baby born in November, remained in critical condition Monday afternoon. Everyone else injured in the crash, including the other three children, was in stable condition, Cowart said.
The 911 call came in at 12:31 p.m. on Easter.
A 2003 Kia Sorrento had been heading north on State Road 26 when it veered across the street's centerline and into the southbound lane, striking the Corolla head-on, Tobias said. The impact sent the Toyota off the road.
Meanwhile, the Kia struck another vehicle — a 2007 Toyota Scion — and both cars swerved off the road, Tobias said. The accident blocked State Road 26 from Copeland Road to the intersection of 39th Avenue.
Tobias provided the names of the people who were involved in the crash but did not have information on the injuries each suffered as of Monday afternoon.
