Bonners Ferry, ID: U.S. 95 crash sends three to hospital on Saturday, July 18th 2015
A teenager was airlifted to the hospital and another two people were injured after a two-car crash south of Bonners Ferry just after noon Saturday.The Idaho State Police reported that Gary Alvarez, 69, of Acton, Calif., was driving a 2007 Ford Pickup southbound on U.S. 95 and was slowing to turn east on Brown Creek Road. The line of traffic was also slowing behind him. Cheyann Phillips, 17, of Moyie Springs, driving a 1997 Ford Explorer, attempted to pass a line of approximately five to six cars at a high rate of speed, the ISP said. Phillips struck Alvarez in the northbound lane. Alvarez was pushed back into the southbound lane. Phillips' vehicle vaulted off the northbound side of the road into a field. She was cited for reckless driving.Alvarez and his passenger, Larry Franklin of Sandpoint, did not sustain injuries. Alvarez was wearing his seat belt. Phillips was airlifted by Life Flight to Kootenai Health in Coeur d'Alene. Phillips' passengers, Aaron Keiser and Adrianna Perez, ages and hometowns not released, did sustain injuries and were transported to Boundary Community Hospital in Bonners Ferry. ISP said the use of seat belts in the vehicle Phillips was driving is under investigation.
