Rising Sun, MD : Motorcyclist killed, passenger injured in Rising Sun-area crash on Friday, July 29, 2016

A Pennsylvania man was killed and his passenger was critically injured Friday when they were ejected from a motorcycle on a Rising Sun-area highway, according to Maryland State Police.

Investigators identified the victim as Owen M. Lane, 63, of Peach Bottom, Pa., police said. He was pronounced dead at the crash scene on Route 1 near Connelly Road, police added.

An MSP helicopter flew his passenger, Iona F. Lane, 57, also of Peach Bottom, Pa., to University of Maryland's Shock Trauma Unit in Baltimore, where she arrived in critical condition, police reported.

Lane was operating a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle in the southbound lane of Rt. 1, heading toward Connelly Road, about 1 p.m. Friday when he lost control of his motorcycle, according to police.

As he approached, a Ford Windstar driven by Kathleen N. Neely, 78, of Conowingo, was traveling on Connelly Road heading toward Route 1, police said.

After stopping at the stop sign, police added, Neely pulled across the southbound lane of Route 1 and entered the northbound lane.

At that point, Lane applied the brakes on his southbound motorcycle, which slid onto its left side after he lost control of it and he and his passenger were ejected from the Harley, police reported.

Lane and his passenger came to rest in the southbound travel lane of Route 1, and the motorcycle came to rest on the right shoulder of southbound Route 1, just south of Connelly Road, police said.

Neely pulled to the shoulder of northbound Route 1 and dialed 911, police added.

An MSP accident reconstructionist is handling the investigation, which is ongoing, police reported.
