Newark, DE : No children injured in a two vehicle crash involving a school bus in Newark on Monday morning, April 18, 2016
Delaware State Police investigated a two vehicle crash involving a school bus Monday morning in Newark.
The investigation determined the crash happened as Albert M. Robinson, 68, of Newark, was operating a 2010 Chevrolet HHR and was traveling in an eastbound direction on Old Baltimore in the area of Deer Run Drive. As Robinson approached the area, he failed to see a 2005 Freightliner school bus being operated by Robin Nickle, 43, of Wilmington, had entered into the eastbound lane with its flashing lights activated after picking up a group of Kuumba Academy students from a bus stop.
The front right bumper of Robinson’s vehicle then struck the left rear of the school bus. The Chevrolet then overturned, coming to rest on its roof.
The school bus was able to come to a controlled stop in the roadway. Albert Robinson, who was properly restrained at the time of the crash, was trapped in his vehicle until he could be extricated by emergency personnel.
He was then treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics before being transported by EMS to the Christiana Hospital with serious injuries. Nickle, who was also properly restrained at the time of the crash, was not injured.
A female aid on her bus was removed from the scene and transported by EMS to the Christiana Hospital where she was treated and released. Five students who were on the bus at the time of the crash were not injured. No charges were filed.
