Garden Corners, MI : Driver injured after collision between two semi-trucks on U.S. 2 in Garden Corners on Tuesday morning, February 24, 2015

Two semi-trucks were involved in a serious crash on U.S. 2 in Garden Corners Tuesday morning.

According to Chief Keith Farley of the Garden Fire Department, around 9:30 a.m., a semi heading east on U.S. 2, driven by 60-year-old Erik Somirs of Long Lane, was turning into a rest area, when it was rear-ended by another semi, driven by 59-year-old William Watson of Hawks. Both semis went off the road. The second semi went into the trees.

Somirs's semi was carrying 40,000 pounds of dynamite, and only sustained minor damage. Somirs was uninjured in the crash.

Watson has to be extricated by the Jaws of Life and was airlifted to UP Health System Marquette via Valley Med Flight for treatment of his injuries. A passenger in one of the semis was taken to Schoolcraft County Hospital to be treated for chest pain.

Traffic was stopped for about two hours. The crash is still under investigation.

Responding to the scene was Rampart EMS, Tri Star EMS, Garden Township Fire Department, Valley Med Flight, the Delta County Sheriff's Department and the Michigan State Police.
