GILBERT, AZ : Deadly wrong-way crash on 202; 3rd in one week on May 18th 2014

A wrong-way driver on the Loop 202 has caused a deadly crash early Sunday morning.

Two people were killed in the crash on the Loop 202 San Tan near Higley Road in Mesa.

DPS first received a report of a wrong-way driver in a pickup truck on the eastbound 202 at about 1:35am, according to a DPS spokesman. Despite eight DPS patrol units and assistance from Mesa and Gilbert Police departments, the truck that was heading west on the eastbound Loop 202 crashed into a sedan at about 1:48am. Both people in the sedan were killed.

The accident is the third deadly wrong-way driver crash in a week. Mesa Police Sgt. Brandon Mendoza was killed near the US 60 & I-10 on Monday when a wrong-way driver crashed into his car. And on Friday, three people died when a wrong way driver crashed into their van on I-17.
