A stolen car smashed into the side of a La Mesa home while being pursued by California Highway Patrol officers late Wednesday night.

The crash occurred at 11 p.m. in the 8400 block of Lemon Avenue. According to CHP, the incident began when officers ran the Acura’s plates near Grossmont Boulevard and Bancroft Drive and discovered that it had been reported stolen.

They attempted to pull the car over, but it refused to stop and a high-speed chase ensued. When it got too dangerous, officers discontinued it. However, they failed to notice that the car and crashed into the side of a home on Lemon Avenue.

The homeowner told 10News he was inside at a desk when the car came slamming into the house. The driver abandoned the car and fled.

"I was actually sitting right at my desk, which is literally through that window, just taking care of a bit of paperwork for the job," Dr. Gareth Morris said. "And heard the siren in the distance, and a car engine revving up, and then a big crash and enough of a shake that I knew it was extremely close."

Responding officers searched the area but were unable to find the suspect.

A financial estimate of the damage to the home was not confirmed.
