Phoenix police say two women walking on a sidewalk were seriously hurt when struck by a car that jumped a curb and that witnesses then got into a fight with the car's driver.

The incident occurred early Friday morning near 27th and Northern avenues.

Officer James Holmes says the driver got distracted by an unknown object in his car and his car then jumped a curb and hit the women. A third woman walking with them wasn't injured.

Holmes says the 35-year-old driver called police after he pulled over in a nearby car wash and was confronted by witnesses who believed he was trying to flee.

Holmes says nobody was hurt in the fight and nobody was arrested. The driver got a citation for failing to control his vehicle.
