HYDESVILLE, CA : Four people died when pickup truck crashes into tree on Sunday August 10th 2014
The California Highway Patrol says four people died when the pickup truck they were in veered off a road and slammed head-on into a tree in Humboldt County.
The crash on State Route 36 near Hydesville occurred around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. CHP Officer Matt Harvey says most of the 2002 Dodge Dakota's eight occupants were unrestrained in the truck's rear bed.
Four of them — a 13-year-old girl, two women and a man — were pronounced dead at the scene. The other four suffered major injuries.
Harvey said the occupants included some members of the same family. They appeared to be coming from a camping trip or some other type of outing.
Their names have not been released.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, and alcohol has not been ruled out as a factor.
