Amarillo, TX : Samuel Villanueva, 51, dead in a two-car crash on Interstate 40 six miles west of Vega on Wednesday morning, March 4, 2015
A two-car crash on Interstate 40 led to the death of one driver and injuries to the other on Wednesday morning.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says Samuel Villanueva, 51, was ejected from his vehicle during the wreck and was pronounced dead at the scene -- about six miles west of Vega. Villanueva was traveling eastbound on an icy I-40 and failed to control the speed of his car, eventually losing control and sliding into westbound lanes of traffic.
According to the statement, Villanueva was not wearing his seat belt.
Officials say the driver of the other vehicle, Chris Hernandez, took "evasive action" by driving onto the shoulder of the westbound lane but was unable to avoid the collision with Villanueva. Hernandez is in stable condition at a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Sleet during the time of the wreck added to the poor driving conditions.
