Lansing,MI : No tickets after deputy crashes car on August, Wednesday 16th 2017
A deputy totaled his patrol car after he made a “hazardous” turn and collided with another driver, said Benzie County Sheriff Ted Schendel. But the deputy will avoid a ticket or reprimand for the crash.
“As far as I’m concerned he was just doing his job,” Schendel said.
The deputy — on routine patrol along Platte Road the evening of July 1 — passed another driver he clocked traveling at 83 mph, Schendel said. The deputy also noticed a car in his rear-view mirror but flipped on his lights and attempted a U-turn anyway because “he thought it was further behind him,” Schendel said.
The car trailing the deputy then crashed into the patrol car in what Schendel called a “pretty significant hit.” Both drivers dodged injuries but a Michigan State Police investigation revealed they were each responsible for “hazardous actions,” according to the crash report. The deputy returned to work the next day, Schendel said.
Schendel said the speeding car that initially triggered the deputy’s U-turn also stopped, turned around and came back to help after he saw the crash. He — like the deputy and the other driver — also avoided a ticket.
“I’ve been doing this for a long time and most people would have kept on going,” Schendel added.
