A 14-year-old girl was struck and killed in Orange City by a driver who left the scene and later called police to say he might have hit an animal, investigators said.
Orange City police said the girl was struck around 2 a.m. while trying to cross U.S. 17-92.
A police officer performed CPR, but firefighters pronounced her dead at the scene.
Investigators believe the girl was crossing east to west, just south of Enterprise when a vehicle struck her and left the scene.
Investigators said the wife or girlfriend of Walter Gunther, 30, called them shortly after police arrived, saying she thought she might have hit an animal.
When police arrived at the couple's home, Guthner admitted that he was actually driving, alone, on a suspended license.
He was arrested after being interviewed at police headquarters on charges of leaving a deadly accident and driving on a suspended license.
It's unclear why the 14-year-old girl was out at 2 a.m., but police said she had a skateboard with her.
The girl's name has not been released.
